A village built on coal and canal

Timsbury, a village of around 2,600 people, was surrounded by collieries: Amesbury, Mearns, Tyning, Hayeswood, Old Grove, and Upper and Lower Conygre. The Somerset Coal Canal began at Gooseyard bridge in the parish in 1795.

The church of St Mary, rebuilt between 1826 and 1832, is Grade II*. The village core became a conservation area in 1978. The St Marys Green and Somerset Folly estates stand on the site of the demolished Timsbury House.

Older core, later estates

In the conservation-area core, houses are older. Electrical work there needs the same care as anywhere with historic fabric: routes through lofts and floors, minimal chasing, and discreet positions for alarms and external equipment. If your house is listed, check with the council before work that changes its character.

The later estates, including those on the Timsbury House site, have more modern construction, and work there is usually a board change, additional circuits or an EV charger.

If you want an EV charger on a house in the conservation area, think about where it will be seen from. A charger on the front elevation can be prominent; a side wall, the inside of a garage, or a post beside the parking space is often a better choice, and it costs no more when planned from the start.

Questions from Timsbury

Do you cover Timsbury?
Yes, the whole village and the surrounding area, including Camerton, Farmborough and Peasedown St John.
My house is in the conservation area. Can you rewire it without damage?
We plan routes through lofts, floor voids and cupboards to keep chasing to a minimum, and we discuss any visible work with you first. Listed houses may need consent for some works, so check with the council.
How much is an EICR?
It depends on the size of the installation and how many circuits it has. We confirm a fixed price in writing before we start.
