About Peasedown St John

A village that grew with its estates

Peasedown St John sits about two miles north-east of Radstock, with around 6,400 residents. It grew up around Braysdown colliery, sunk in 1845, and the local mines had closed by the 1970s. The Red Post Inn dates from 1851, and St John’s Church, designed by Bodley and Garner, from 1893. The hamlet of Carlingcott, older than the main village, lies to its north.

What shapes the village today is its housing. Large developments in the 1960s, the 1970s and the late 1990s enlarged it, and the A367, which follows the Fosse Way, was bypassed in the mid-1990s.
