Garden & outdoor electrics — common questions.

Can I install garden sockets or fixed lighting myself?

Plug-in garden lights are fine to DIY, but any fixed or buried outdoor electrical work — garden sockets, fixed lighting, a supply to a shed or summer house — is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations and must be installed and certified by a competent person. We design, install, test and certify the work and notify Building Control, so you get a compliant installation with RCD protection and the correct IP-rated equipment.

Can you run power out to a shed, summer house or garden room?

Yes. We run a buried steel-wire-armoured (SWA) submain from the house to a small consumer unit or sub-board in the building, giving you sockets, lighting and heating. Cable depth, RCD protection and earthing all follow BS 7671. See our sheds & summer houses page for detail.

Do outdoor sockets and lights need special protection?

Yes — all outdoor socket-outlets and fixed lighting need 30mA RCD protection, and the equipment must be correctly IP-rated: IP44 minimum under cover, IP65 minimum for anything fully exposed to the weather. Buried cable must be SWA at the correct depth. We don’t fit cheap import floodlights — the seals fail and the units fill with water.

How busy are you in summer, and how soon can you start?

Summer is our busiest season for garden work, so it books up quickly. Get your free survey booked early and we’ll confirm a firm start date with your written quote — we don’t over-promise dates we can’t hit.

How much does garden electrical work cost?

Every job is priced to its own scope after a free survey, with VAT at 20% shown separately. As a rough guide, garden lighting starts from around £280, a powered garden room/shed submain from around £680, and hot-tub supplies and outdoor sockets are quoted to the run and the equipment. You get a fixed written quote before any work starts — no day rates, no open-ended bills.
