Street is mostly family housing: Victorian and Edwardian terraces on the older roads, a large number of inter-war and 1960s semis, and modern estates on the edges. That mix shapes the work. Our electricians spend most of their time here adding sockets and lighting, sorting faults, renewing tired boards and running power out to garages and gardens.

These houses make up a big part of Street, and many of them have reached the point where the electrics have been altered by several owners. The questions we get are predictable: can we have more sockets in the living room, can the kitchen take an induction hob, why does the garage socket trip when it rains, can the old fuse box go?
In a house of this age the wiring may be the original, or it may have been partly replaced at some point. A quick look at the board and a few accessories usually tells us which. If the board still has rewireable fuses or offers no RCD protection, we will recommend you look at consumer unit replacement in Street. If we have doubts about the cable itself, an EICR in Street gives you measured results rather than an opinion.
A fixed written price is given for every planned job, so you know the cost before we start. The price depends on the house: an EICR on the size of the installation and the number of circuits, a fuse board or alarm system on the property, and an EV charger on the charger chosen and the cable run, with the charger included in the quote. If something unexpected turns up behind a wall, we explain it and price it before doing anything extra.
Long, narrow houses with the board often by the front door and the kitchen at the back, sometimes in a later extension. Cable runs from front to back can be awkward, and back extensions are often on a separate, older circuit than you would expect. Upstairs, suspended floors make adding sockets and moving lights reasonably easy.
When the sockets are few, the cables are old and several rooms need work at once, a rewire in Street is sometimes the better use of the money. Partial rewires are common: we replace the circuits that need it and leave sound ones alone.

A lot of Street houses have a garage or a shed at the end of the garden. Power to an outbuilding goes in armoured cable, with its own protection at the board, and weatherproof sockets at the far end. Outdoor sockets on the house wall and lighting for paths and drives are also regular jobs.
With off-street parking, an electric car charger is a common next step. It needs a dedicated circuit, an earthing check and DNO notification, which we handle. See EV charger installation in Street for the details. A few miles away at Butleigh this year we had to investigate an existing supply set-up before fitting a new weatherproof distribution board for a charger, with new meter tails and a new main earthing conductor. That kind of groundwork is why we always survey before quoting a charger.

Switch off the circuit at the board if you safely can and call us. If you let a house in Street, there are extra legal duties: see landlord electrical compliance in Street and our smoke alarm page for Street. For more about the town and its villages, visit our Street area page.
Leave your details and a line about the job. We will ring you back to talk it through and arrange a survey or a written price.
It is not too small. Single sockets, a light fitting or a new switch are everyday jobs. Send a photo of where you want it and one of your consumer unit, and we can usually give a fixed price straight away. It gets tested and certified like anything else.
Usually water is getting into an outdoor fitting, a junction or the cable itself where it runs outside. We test the circuit, find the point where insulation is breaking down and repair or replace that section. If the garage supply was never run in suitable cable, we may recommend a new armoured supply.
No. The power is off for most of the day while the old board comes out and the new one is fitted and tested, but you can stay in the house. We tell you in advance so you can plan around fridges, freezers and working from home.
Working is not the same as protecting you. An old board may have no RCD protection, which is what disconnects the supply quickly if someone touches a live part. A modern RCBO board protects each circuit separately, so one fault does not leave the whole house dark.
Yes. Along with Street itself we work in Walton and Ashcott to the west, Butleigh and Baltonsborough to the south-east and east, Meare out on the Levels, and the Street side of Somerton. If you are not sure whether your address is covered, ring and ask before booking anything.
Priced by the job, not by the hour. A written, fixed price after a survey, NAPIT certification on every notifiable job.
