Security lights

Light the drive, not the neighbours.

What we fit

The right light for each spot.

01

PIR floodlights

A movement sensor switches the light on when someone approaches, then off again after a set time. Good for drives, side passages and back doors.

02

Dusk-to-dawn lights

A daylight sensor turns the light on at dusk and off at dawn. Low-level lanterns and porch lights work well this way, giving steady light without glare.

03

PIR wall and porch lights

Smaller fittings with a built-in sensor, for front doors and paths, so you're not fumbling for keys in the dark.

Positioning

Light where you need it.

Most complaints about security lights come from where they're pointed, not how bright they are. We set each light up on site so it does its job without becoming a nuisance to you or anyone else.

  • Mounted high enough to be hard to reach, with the beam angled down onto the ground you want lit
  • The sensor's detection area set to cover your drive or path, not the pavement, the road or next door's garden
  • Sensitivity and on-time adjusted so passing cars, cats and moving branches don't keep setting it off
  • Brightness to suit the space: a small yard doesn't need a floodlight meant for a car park

Why aim matters. Light that spills into a neighbour's home can be more than an annoyance. GOV.UK lists artificial light from premises among the issues a council can treat as a statutory nuisance under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. Aiming a light properly at the start avoids the problem.

Built for outdoors

Sealed, protected, tidy.

01

Outdoor-rated fittings

Every fitting, junction box and cable entry is rated for outdoor use and sealed with proper glands, like the floodlight at the top of this page.

02

RCD protection

Outdoor lighting circuits we install are protected by an RCD at the consumer unit. If your board can't give the circuit that protection, we tell you before you commit, and quote the board work separately.

03

Tidy cable runs

Cables go through the wall behind the fitting where possible. Where they have to run outside, they're clipped neatly or run in conduit.

04

A switch inside

We can fit a switch indoors so you can turn the light off altogether or, on many fittings, override the sensor, without climbing a ladder.

Upgrades and repairs

Old floodlight? Faulty sensor?

We replace old halogen floodlights with LED fittings, swap failed sensors, and move lights that were put in the wrong place. While we're up there, we check the cable, the junction box and the circuit protection, because an outdoor connection that has let water in can make a light trip the RCD or flicker. If your security light is tripping the power, our guide to electrical problems covers what is safe to check first.

Planning more for the outside of the house? Security lights pair well with garden lighting, outdoor sockets and CCTV, and a wired doorbell at the front door. We can plan and wire them together in one visit.

Pricing

What affects the job.

Every job is priced individually. Send us a few photos and we can often quote without a visit; if we need to see it, we survey first and give you a fixed written quote.

  • The wall: brick, render or Somerset stone
  • Mounting height, and whether a ladder or an access tower is needed
  • The cable route from inside to each light
  • How many lights, and how you want them switched
  • Whether there is a suitable outdoor circuit with RCD protection already

Any plastering or decorating around new cable or switch routes is by others, unless it is written into your quote.

For a quote from photos

Send us these.

  • The wall where each light will go
  • The area you want lit, taken from where the light will be
  • Your consumer unit, cover closed is fine
  • Any existing outdoor light you want replaced

We cover Wells, Shepton Mallet, Glastonbury, Street, Frome, Bath, Bruton, Castle Cary, Midsomer Norton, Radstock, Wedmore and the villages between. All areas.

FAQ

Security light questions.

Why does my security light keep coming on by itself?

Usually the sensor is picking up passing cars, animals, moving branches or warm air from a vent. Turning down the sensitivity, shortening the on-time or re-aiming the sensor normally sorts it. If it still switches on with nothing there, or flickers, the fitting may be failing and we can replace it.

Will a security light annoy my neighbours?

Not if it is aimed properly. We angle the beam down onto your own ground, and set the sensor so it doesn't pick up next door's garden or the street.

Can a security light stay on all night?

Yes. A dusk-to-dawn fitting stays on through the hours of darkness. For bright floodlights, PIR switching is usually kinder to the neighbours.

Do outdoor lights need RCD protection?

Every outdoor lighting circuit we install is protected by an RCD at the consumer unit. If your existing board can't provide that, we tell you before you commit.

Can you replace my old halogen floodlight?

Yes. We replace old halogen floodlights with LED fittings, and check the cable, the junction box and the circuit protection while we're up there.

Can you link security lights with CCTV?

We install CCTV as well, so lights and cameras can be planned together, with lighting placed to help the cameras rather than dazzle them.
