Holcombe is a small parish of fewer than a thousand people, which includes the hamlets of Barlake and Edford. Like its neighbours, it had several mines on the Somerset coalfield, all now closed.
The old Church of St Andrew has late Saxon or early Norman origins and was rebuilt in the 16th century; it is now cared for by the Churches Conservation Trust. Captain Scott’s parents lived in Holcombe and ran the brewery, and there is a family grave and a memorial to Scott in the old church.
A rural parish brings rural installations. Properties often have long supplies to barns, stables, garages or workshops, and older cottages carry wiring that has been extended over many years. An EICR that includes every outbuilding is the right starting point, especially before buying.
Where an older cottage has a fuse board in a cramped spot, or a board with no RCD protection, a new RCBO consumer unit is usually the priority. Where the wiring itself is failing, we plan a rewire around solid walls and low ceilings.
Some older cottages still have night storage heaters on an off-peak supply, sometimes from a second meter or a separate board. Those circuits are tested along with the rest. Storage heater supplies carry heavy loads for hours, so terminals and connections there are one of the first places we look for heat damage.
