Exterior light fittings on a stone and clad building

A former mining village on the Mells River

Coleford sits on the Mells River on the edge of the Mendip Hills, about five and a half miles west of Frome, with around 2,300 residents. Its mining history is long: Mackintosh Colliery worked from 1867 until flooding closed it in 1919, Newbury Colliery closed in 1927, and in 1869 a firedamp explosion at the Coal Barton mine killed nine miners.

The village also has a curiosity: the "Huckyduck", an unfinished aqueduct for the Dorset and Somerset Canal, abandoned in 1803. Holy Trinity church was built in 1831, and the Methodist chapel in 1865.

Electrical work in a hillside village

Where a property has a garage, workshop or garden building some way from the house, the supply to it is often older than the house wiring, run in cable that was never meant to be buried, or taken from a socket circuit. We test them as part of any EICR and replace them with armoured cable on a dedicated circuit where needed.

Older cottages need the same approach as elsewhere on the coalfield: test first, then decide between a new board, targeted work or a rewire.

Homes off the mains gas network heat with oil, LPG, solid fuel or electric storage heaters, and each has its own electrical needs: a boiler on its own fused supply, CO alarms near any fuel-burning appliance, and correctly sized circuits for storage heaters. We check all of them as part of an EICR.

Questions from Coleford

Do you cover Coleford near Radstock?
Yes. Coleford is in BA3 and we cover the whole village, along with Holcombe, Mells and the surrounding area.
Can you run power to my garden workshop?
Yes. We run armoured cable on its own circuit from the consumer unit, with RCBO protection, and fit sockets and lighting in the workshop. Outbuilding supplies are certified like any other circuit.
Do I need a CO alarm for a wood burner?
In a rented home it is a legal requirement in any room with a fixed combustion appliance, excluding gas cookers. In your own home it is strongly advisable.

We also cover Holcombe, Chilcompton, Frome and Midsomer Norton.
