Why CHAS matters on commercial work

Most large commercial clients in the South West — housing associations, councils, schools, FM companies, multi-site retail — won't let an electrical contractor on site without CHAS pre-qualification. CHAS audits health-and-safety policy, training records, RAMS competence, insurance cover, accident history and method statements. It's the trade body that gives commercial clients confidence we won't cause them an HSE problem.

Our reference is CHAS 158368. We pair it with NAPIT 66245 (BS 7671 self-certification) and City & Guilds 2391 (inspection & testing). Together those three are the gold-standard commercial electrician credential set in the South West.

Plus full £5m public liability, £10m employers' liability, Enhanced DBS for school / care home work, and 12-month workmanship guarantee on every install backed by the TrustMark Government Endorsed scheme.

Common questions

What's the difference between a residential and commercial electrician?

Commercial work has different regulatory weight: BS 5839-1 fire alarm grading (Cat L1/L2/L3/L4/L5 or M), BS 5266 emergency lighting with annual full-discharge testing, statutory annual EICR on most commercial premises (insurance-driven), CHAS pre-qualification for contractor packs, three-phase 400V supplies, larger consumer units (Hager / Wylex / Schneider commercial ranges), plus PAT testing on portable equipment. We hold CHAS 158368 alongside NAPIT 66245 specifically because commercial clients ask for it before they'll let you on site.

How often does commercial premises need an EICR?

Most commercial insurance policies require an annual EICR. The BS 7671 IET Guidance Note 3 maximum interval is 5 years for general commercial, 3 years for industrial, and annually for premises with the public present (pubs, restaurants, retail, schools, care homes, hotels). In practice insurers and landlords usually default to annual on anything customer-facing.

Do you do fire alarm installs and emergency lighting?

Yes — full BS 5839-1 fire alarm design and install (Cat L1, L2, L3, L4, L5, M) and BS 5266 emergency lighting design, install and annual 3-hour discharge testing. We issue the design certificate, installation certificate and commissioning certificate as a complete package, and add the premises to our service rota for the annual statutory tests.

Can you handle three-phase 400V installs?

Yes — three-phase commercial supplies, sub-mains, motor circuits, large kitchen ranges (60A+), wash-bay 32A/63A red commando, factory/warehouse distribution, fleet EV bays load-balanced across phases. If the existing supply is single-phase only, we file the DNO supply-upgrade request as a separate workstream — typically 6–12 weeks for a single-to-three-phase capacity uplift on a commercial site.

Do you cover out-of-hours and weekend work?

Yes — most commercial board changes, fire-alarm panel replacements and big circuit additions need power off, which means trading hours don't work. We routinely do Saturday-morning shutdown windows or evening starts, with everything tested, certified and live again before the doors open Monday. Quoted at the same day rate from £150/day + VAT, with out-of-hours premium for Sundays and bank holidays.
