What we do
We supply the fan and fit it properly.
A ceiling fan is part light fitting, part machine. It needs a solid fixing, enough height, and controls that suit how you'll use the room. We supply and fit ceiling fans: tell us the room, the ceiling height and the look you're after, and we'll suggest fans that suit it and fit the one you choose. Already bought one? We'll fit that too, once we've checked it suits the ceiling.
- Fix the fan to a proper support in the ceiling structure
- Check the ceiling height against the fan maker's minimum
- Wire the fan, its light kit and its controls
- Replace an existing ceiling light with a fan
- Add a new switch position where you want one
- Test, certify and show you how it works
The fixing
It has to hang from something solid.
A ceiling fan is heavier than most light fittings, and it moves. It has to hang from something solid: a joist, or a support fixed between joists, using the bracket and fixings set out in the fan maker's instructions. A plasterboard ceiling, or an old ceiling rose on its own, isn't a fixing.
In newer houses we can usually reach the joists from the loft. Older homes across Somerset and Bath often have lath and plaster ceilings, or a floor above rather than a loft, so we find the joists first and plan the fixing before anything is cut. If a support has to go in from below, we tell you what's involved before you commit.
Once the fan is up, we check it runs true. A fan that wobbles usually has a fixing or blade balance problem, and that is put right before we leave.
Height and clearance
Measured before it goes up.
Fan makers set a minimum height from the floor to the blades, and clearances from walls and other fittings. We measure the room against the instructions for your fan before fitting it, so nobody walks into it and the blades have room to move air.
- Low ceilings: a flush-mounted fan sits tight to the ceiling, where the maker allows it.
- High or sloping ceilings: a longer downrod or an angled mount brings the fan down to a useful height.
- Clear of obstructions: blades kept away from wardrobe doors, top bunks, loft hatches and pendant lights.
Lights and controls
Pull cord, wall or remote.
Pull cord
The simplest option. Fan speed and the light are controlled by cords on the fan, and the existing light switch turns the supply on and off.
Wall control
Speed and light control from the wall. This usually needs the right cabling between the switch position and the fan, and a wall control made for that fan. If the existing cable isn't suitable, we quote for a new one.
Remote control
Many fans come with a remote and a receiver that fits in the fan's canopy. We wire it so the wall switch still turns the whole fan off.
Light kits
If the fan has a light, it can share the fan's control or be switched separately, depending on the fan and the cabling. We explain the options at the survey.
Where they work well
Rooms that get warm.
Ceiling fans earn their place in bedrooms and loft rooms that hold the heat, conservatories and garden rooms, open-plan living spaces, holiday lets and small offices. In older homes with lower ceilings, a flush-mounted fan is often the way to fit one; in barn conversions and rooms open to the rafters, a downrod brings it to the right height. For lighting the rest of the room, see our lighting and downlight pages.
Pricing
What affects the job.
Every job is priced individually. Send us a few photos and we can often quote without a visit; if we need to see it, we survey first and give you a fixed written quote.
- The ceiling: plasterboard or lath and plaster, and access from above
- Whether there is a lighting point where the fan will go
- The controls you want, and whether new cabling is needed
- Ceiling height, and whether a downrod or angled mount is needed
- How many fans, and in how many rooms
Any plastering or decorating around new cable or switch routes is by others, unless it is written into your quote.
For a quote from photos
Send us these.
- The ceiling where the fan will go, and the existing light if there is one
- The room, so we can see the height and anything nearby
- The fan's make and model, or a link to it
- The loft above, if there is one
We cover Wells, Shepton Mallet, Glastonbury, Street, Frome, Bath, Bruton, Castle Cary, Midsomer Norton, Radstock, Wedmore and the villages between. All areas.
FAQ
Ceiling fan questions.
Can you swap my ceiling light for a fan?
Usually, yes. We use the existing lighting point where it is suitable, fix the fan to the ceiling structure rather than the old light's fixings, and check the circuit before connecting it.
Will a ceiling fan work in a room with a low ceiling?
Often, using a flush-mounted fan where the maker allows it. Every fan has a minimum blade height in its instructions, and we measure the room against it before fitting.
Can I control the fan from a wall switch?
Yes, with a wall control made for that fan. It usually needs suitable cabling between the switch and the fan, which we check at the survey and quote for if a new cable is needed.
Can you supply the fan?
Yes. We supply and fit ceiling fans. Send us a photo of the room and the ceiling height, tell us the style you like, and we'll suggest fans that suit it. If you've already bought one, we'll check it suits the ceiling and fit that instead.
My ceiling fan wobbles. Can you fix it?
Usually. A wobble normally comes from the fixing or the blade balance. We check the fixing first, then the blades, and put right whichever is causing it.
Is the installation certified?
Yes. We test every fan we fit and give you a certificate for the electrical work.
