"Can I just plug it in?" is the first question almost everyone asks about an EcoFlow STREAM battery, and it is a fair one. The rules changed this summer, and EcoFlow's own pages do not all say the same thing. This guide sets out what the government changed, what EcoFlow's UK pages say, and what we do when we wire one in.

What changed in August 2026
The government confirmed that plug-in solar panels can be bought and used in Great Britain from 27 August 2026, with each kit up to 800W (GOV.UK). That announcement is about plug-in solar panels. It does not set out rules for plugging a home battery into a socket.
What EcoFlow's UK pages say
EcoFlow's UK pages point in two directions, which is where the confusion comes from:
- The UK STREAM series page says the battery system requires connection by a certified professional or qualified electrician and should not be connected to a household socket for power feed-in (EcoFlow: STREAM series).
- EcoFlow's UK review of the STREAM Ultra says that in the UK the STREAM cable has to be hardwired to your distribution board by a certified electrician, who also handles the G98 notification (EcoFlow: STREAM Ultra).
- EcoFlow's UK consultation page describes STREAM as plug and play with no electrician required (EcoFlow: consultation), and its UK blog on the plug-in solar change markets plug-in kits as needing no electrician (EcoFlow: plug-in solar).
We go by the product page and the installation guidance, because they are the documents that describe how the battery connects to your wiring. If you are unsure which applies to your model, ask EcoFlow and get the answer in writing, ideally before you buy.
What a hardwired install involves
- A dedicated circuit from the consumer unit to the battery, with its own protective device.
- Isolation at the battery so it can be switched off safely.
- Testing to BS 7671, an electrical certificate, and Part P notification through NAPIT.
- The G98 notification to the network operator. See our G98 guide.
If the board has no spare way, or it is an older plastic board with circuits sharing one RCD, we price the board work first so there are no surprises on the day.
Power cuts
A battery does not automatically keep the house running in a power cut. EcoFlow's guidance says backup depends on the battery and the installation being designed for it (EcoFlow: G98 notification). Its STREAM Ultra review says the unit's own AC outlets can supply up to 1,200W (EcoFlow: STREAM Ultra). Tell us if backup matters and we will say what your setup can and cannot do.
Common questions
Is it legal to plug in a battery in the UK?
The August 2026 change made plug-in solar panels up to 800W legal in Great Britain. The government announcement does not cover plugging a home battery into a socket, and EcoFlow's UK product page says the STREAM battery should not be connected to a household socket for power feed-in.
Do I need an electrician for an EcoFlow STREAM?
EcoFlow's UK STREAM series page says the battery system requires connection by a certified professional or qualified electrician. That is the install we do, with the G98 notification and certificate included.
Can you fit the solar panels too?
No. We do not fit solar panels. Our job is the battery side: the circuit, the protection, the notification and the certificate.
