Wall lights along a stone-arched church interior

A historic village on the old wool road

Norton St Philip stands on the A366 from Trowbridge to Radstock and the B3110 from Bath to Frome, with around 850 residents. The George Inn was built in the 14th or 15th century as a wool store for the priory, and is Grade I listed. The church of St Philip and St James is Grade II*; it dates from the 14th century and was restored in 1847.

In 1685 the village saw the Battle of Norton St Philip during the Monmouth Rebellion. More recently, the Fortescue Fields development added around 57 homes and a small supermarket between 2012 and 2014.

Listed buildings and new homes

In a village this old, electrical work in the historic houses is about protecting what is there. We test before changing anything, plan cable routes through roof spaces and floors, and choose accessory finishes that suit the building. If your home is listed, alterations that affect its character may need listed building consent, so speak to the council before work starts.

The homes at Fortescue Fields and other later houses have modern installations. Requests there are typically EV chargers, outside power and lighting, and extra circuits.

Homes at Fortescue Fields were finished between 2012 and 2014, so their original mains smoke alarms are at or past the end of their ten-year life. Replacing them like for like, with linked units on the same bases where possible, is a short job.

Questions from Norton St Philip

Do you cover Norton St Philip?
Yes, the whole village and the surrounding area, including Hinton Charterhouse, Beckington and Rode.
Do I need consent to rewire a listed house?
It depends on the works. Anything that affects the character of a listed building can need listed building consent. Check with the council; we can describe the routes and methods we propose so you can explain them.
Can you fit an EV charger at a newer home?
Yes. The price depends on the charger you choose, the cable run and your board, and the written quote after a survey sets out exactly what is included, charger and all.
